Installing Ubuntu 8.10

I’ve recently upgraded to 8.10 on the HP 2133 and it’s essentially working out of the box: it loads the Broadcom STA wireless drivers.

My steps:

• make a bootable USB stick from the 8.10 image with Unetbootin
• during the initial boot, hit “e” on Default, then append “xforcevesa” to the boot line
• install 8.10 normally
• after it reboots, install the Broadcom STA driver from the administrative menu

The only thing that isn’t right at this point is the display resolution: it’s 1280×720 rather than 1280×768.  This is easy to fix with a custom xorg.conf file (below).
